OBVIOUS DOUBLE (OR TRIPLE) PLAYS

A classic double play occurs when a ground ball is hit to an infielder with a runner at first base and there are less than two outs.

A throw is made to second base to force out the runner. Immediately thereafter, the fielder who put out the runner at second base throws the ball to first base to put out the batter.

Variations on this basic script are common.

Example: A force out at third base is immediately followed by a force out at second base.

A fly ball is caught in the outfield and thrown back to a base and the runner who was at that base when the ball was hit is put out because he could not get back to the base in time to avoid being put out.

With runners at third base and first base, the catcher picks off the runner at first base. The runner at third base attempts to advance on the play but he too is put out when the first baseman fires the ball back to the catcher.
